King Concrete vs Ground Screw

Updated: Jul 5, 2021

Our pods are designed to stand on a stable load bearing foundation and as part of our fixed price builds we have opted to supply concrete piles.

Did you know that Venice is built on wooden piles that were hammered into waterlogged marshland? Well it’s true and has been a successful method to support buildings for many years as they transfer the load onto a stable footing. Concrete piles perform better over time than alternative methods such as ground screws as they will not corrode or rot.

In most cases galvanised screw threads can to be installed within a day, much the same as our pile foundations with very little disruption to site. While advertised to last 50 years these estimations do not factor clay soil or higher acid soils, damage to the protective galvanised surface when screwing into and past rubble, stone and shale that is every present in the South of England. It's very easy to see that agricultural gates, posts, fencing etc will all rust and in some cases have significantly less that 50 year estimations, more like 10-15 year life cycles. In some cases ground screws that have been designed for roadside signage are repurposed for garden rooms.

Concrete pile foundations will last far longer than 50 years, they will continue to get harder and harder with moisture over time. They are a cost effective way to support our buildings over a longer period of time and will handle being close to trees and into clay soil.

We can install on a prepared base as long as it is accurate and level to the specification that we require.
